Young people from 10 countries explore Greek language, history and culture in Drama

Thirty young men and women from 10 countries around the world are currently in the city of Drama, not only to learn the Greek language but also to experience first-hand the history, traditions and culture that accompany it.

The 14th Summer Programme of Greek Language, Translation and Culture, organised by the Centro de Estudios Bizantinos, Neogriegos y Chipriotas and the Department of Greek Philology of the University of Granada, is once again turning the town of Drama into an international meeting point for people brought together by their love for Greece.

For the ninth consecutive year, and over a period of 15 days, the city is hosting this important educational initiative, thanks to the long-standing cooperation between the “Centro de Estudios Bizantinos, Neogriegos y Chipriotas”, the local community, institutions and residents of the area, who have warmly embraced the foreign students.

The director of the Centre and emeritus professor of Philology at the University of Granada, Dr Moschos Morfakidis Filaktos, who originates from Drama, is the driving force behind this long-running effort to promote the Greek language and culture in the Spanish-speaking and international academic community.

Speaking to the state-run news agency amna.gr, Morfakidis Filaktos  noted that “for us, the most important aspect of this programme is the experiences gained by young people, the communication they develop with their peers in Drama and the social connections they create alongside the summer school.”

The programme is based on two main pillars. The first concerns Modern Greek language courses at three levels of proficiency, while the second focuses on a literary translation workshop from Greek into Spanish.
