FinMin Venizelos: Greece’s at Razor’s Edge

Greece is at razor’s edge, pressure is high, money is rare, additional austerity measures are likely,  nerves lay blank and ministers argue with current or former colleagues and all together get the criticism from the opposition parties. Earlier Thursday a ‘rocket’ was fired by a former deputy Finance Minister who claimed that he had left the cabinet because he didn’t manage to combat tax-evasion. And what did you do while at the ministry?” FinMin Venizelos asked him in a sharp tone. Later the former deputy FinMin told journalists that he he a list of  3,800 tax dodgers who owe the state more than 1 million euro each. At the same time, tension is high on whether the July 21st Agreements will be renegotiate. Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos described the situation as “at razor’s edge”.

“The agreement of July 21 either would be guaranteed as it is or we would seek something better Greek FinMin has reportedly said at the morning meeting of a ruling party parliamentary committee.

Talking to PASOK MPs, Evangelos Venizelos said that there is no strategic plan in Europe, sources noted, while he said that the delay should be attributed to the ongoing discussions between the two intrazone bloc’s, Germany-Holland and France-Italy-Spain.

He added that the discussions focus on addressing the debt problem, commenting that the country is on the razor’s edge.

“Greece would either stay nailed down or emerge [from the crisis]”, he stressed. Regarding the fate of July 21 agreement, he declined to forecast but said that Greek government wants a legally and institutionally regulated agreement.

But, several lawmakers spoke of need for political initiatives to accelerate the program. Reportedly, Venizelos replied that elections would be disastrous for the country at that moment.

The issue of a referendum was not discussed comprehensively.” source: capital.gr
