A middle-aged man claiming to carry explosives is threatening to blow himself up in downtown Athens. According to Greek news portals, the man is sitting on a bench of a park near the presidential manor and the prime ministers’ office.
Greek police has cordoned the area, while mediators have moved to the spot and try to convince the man to give up.
News portal newsit.gr report that the man had previously attempted to hand out his demands to the President.
According to Proto Thema, the man is in his fourties and claims he carries explosives in his jacket. He apparently had no expressed his demands.
UPDATE: The man, 58, surrendered himself to police. He had no explosives strapped but was carrying a mobile phone, a remote control and one battery. Asked if he had any economic problems, he answered: “Not me. The country has..” and expressed disappointment that his girl friend had recently broke up with him.
He has been taken to police station.
