AI voices concern over inmate on 34th day of hunger strike; Costas Sakkas in 2.5-year detention without trial

Amnesty International’s Greek branch has expressed concern about the continued detainment of 29-year-old student Costas Sakkas, who was on the 34th day of a hunger strike on Monday in protest at his continued detention without trial.

Sakkas, who is being treated at Nikaia General Hospital near Piraeus, is accused of membership of urban guerrilla group Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire.

He has been in pretrial custody for two-and-a-half years, when the law stipulates 18 months as the maximum.

In its statement, Amnesty International called on authorities to comply with the “process foreseen by the law.” (ekathimerini)
