Ex PASOK Defense Minister could face charges for alleged tax evasion of 3 million EUR

After former PASOK minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, another former PASOK minister, another former Defense Minister could appear before justice. Yiannos Papantoniou could face charges for the alleged tax evasion of 3 million euro, Greek media report on Thursday. Yiannos Papantoniou had also served as Minister of Finance and Economy.

Former Defense Minister Yiannos Papantoniou and his wife, Stavroula Kourakou, could face charges for allegedly evading 3 million euros in taxes between 2000 and 2010, according to reports.

The Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) has been investigating their assets after Kourakou appeared on the so-called Lagarde list, which contained the names of some 2,000 Greeks with deposits at a Geneva branch of HSBC. She was found to have deposited about 1.3 million euros in savings in Switzerland.

The investigation was ordered by prosecutor Popi Papandrou who wanted to discover whether taxes had been paid on these savings.

However, reports said Papandreou did not press charges for tax evasion against the ex-PASOK official and his wife as the law stipulates that the case file must first be taken to the relevant tax office, which must complete the checks and then notify a prosecutor if the tax evasion is confirmed. Private Mega TV reported that with the new tax evasion law, Papantoniou and his wife could escape charges if they pay the taxes they would owe to the state.

PS next would be most likely a former PASOK Transportation minister for having accepted a generous donation by SIEMENS to cover his election campaign expenses.

Glad to hear that no Nea Dimocratia minister was never involved in any weird tax-evasion, bribes cases #PHEW 🙂
