The number of independent lawmakers in Greek parliament rose to 23 after Vasilis Oikonomou resigned from Democratic Left on Friday. Τhe independent lawmakers build together the fourth power group in the Greek Parliament even if some of them have formed the lose fraction of “Independent Democrats” consisting of 13 MP’s.
Oikonomou’s resignation is the third from a parliamentary group after the EU elections on May 28th. Two MPs resigned from “Independent Greeks” last week.
Independent lawmakers have left Nea Dimokratia, PASOK, Golden Dawn, Independent Greeks and ΣΥΡΙΖΑ, that is the parties with which they entered the Parliament after June 2012 elections.

There has been talk of two independent MPs – Loverdos & Aidonis – being about to return to PASOK but this will depend on whether Loverdos would be appointed into Minister in the upcoming government reshuffle.
The pond of independent MPs is full of attractive fish the coalition government and the opposition try to catch for their own purposes. The coalition government parties – ND and PASOK – try to bring back independent MPs, defiant from their own or other parties. The coalition government needs a majority of 180 votes in order to elect the President of the Republic beginning of 2015.
