Yellow cabs are back on the streets of Athens, after drivers suspended the 24-hour strike on Thursday afternoon, June 14th 2018. The powerful lobby of taxi drivers had earlier reached an agreement with Transportation Minister, Christos Spirtzis, to not cancel the clause the would allow the return of Uber. Taxi drivers had threatened with 24-hour rolling strikes, the first was launched on Wednesday and the second today, Thursday.
According to state ERT, the minister agreed to remove the clause that would cancel the obligatory contract of minimum 3-hours car rental companies have with a driver.
The abolish will apply only to mainland Greece, the islands of Euboea (Evia) and Crete.obligation to have a minimum 3-hour car rental contract with drivers.
In the remaining islands, the contract will be valid for the period of half an hour in the months May to August, otherwise the 3-hour contract will be implemented.
I have to admit I do not quite understand the clause and the changes but important is that the taxis are back on the streets especially on a day where public transport means are launching work stoppages.
Also in Thessaloniki and other Greek cities taxis have reportedly returned to the streets as of 8:00 pm local time.
Who takes cabs anyway. So expensive. Cheaper to rent a car if you need one, that’s what I do.
My favorite trick is renting a car in Athens and dropping it off at the airport, costs like 20 EUR a day and you have the car the whole day, a taxi is more, and don’t get me started with double tariff!
