A court in Athens court has ordered Alternate Health Minister Pavlos Polakis to pay financial damages to the family of a journalist for defamation of character.
Polakis has alleged that the late Vassilis Beskenis, a political journalist and commentator at private Skai TV, had been being appointed to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO) following a stint at the health ministry press office during the tenure of former New Democracy Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis.
The court found that Polakis did not bring evidence for his claims. Beskenis had no connection to KEELPNO, the prosecutor found out after investigation.
Judges ruled that the “false allegations” made by Polakis had “damaged [Beskenis’s] honor and reputation.”
The journalist passed away following a heart attack in December 2017 at the age of 43.
Reacting to court ruling, Polakis posted on his Facebook account that he will appeal the court decision.
The amount of the fine has not been revealed.
