Lifeguard Sofia pulled seven bathers, among them two children, out of the waves at Avithos beach on the island of Kefalonia and has become a hero.
The incident that could have taken a very different turn occurred on Friday, July 3rd, at the beach of Avithos, in South Kefalonia.

It was reported to local media KefaloniaPress by bathers who were on the beach at the time, experienced the agony firsthand and wanted to publicly thank lifeguard Sofia for her immediate intervention.
Avithos is one of the most beloved beaches in South Kefalonia. With fine sand, shallow waters and an image that usually reminds one of a family beach, it attracts many visitors every day, especially families with children.
However, as sometimes happens at sea, the fair weather and the calm sea changed suddenly.

According to the testimonies of bathers, on Friday afternoon at approximately 2:00 p.m. a sudden sharp swell appeared and then started to pull bathers away from the beach and into the deeper sea.
Most bathers managed to get out, but seven people found themselves in a difficult position, including two children, siblings.
At that moment, the beach lifeguard, Sofia Kaspiri, from Patras, a graduate of the School of Nursing and with three years of experience in life-guarding, intervened.
Without losing her composure, she entered the sea and began to help the bathers who could not return to shore on their own. Her task became even more difficult, as she had to deal not only with the waves and current, but also with the panic of people who were in danger.
At one point, according to the same testimonies, she found herself trying to help three adults who had become exhausted in the water at the same time. At that time, the children from the beach canteen realized the difficulty of the situation and entered the sea to help.
Sofia managed to lead all the bathers safely to the shore.
The rescue operation lasted about two and a half hours, from 14:00 to 16:30, with the lifeguard entering the sea again and again to help people who were having difficulty returning to shore.
Nobody was injured and everybody felt relieved, great fatigue and a deep feeling of gratitude and great emotions.
Speaking to KefaloniaPress, Sofia described the incident as a difficult moment, but she mainly keept its human side.
“It was a difficult phase. But when I pulled the two brothers out of the sea and their mother came crying to thank me, I forgot all the trouble and anguish. Her reaction gave me great joy.”
Sofia believed that her experience in rescue, as well as her studies in nursing, helped her to deal with such situations with greater composure, not only in the water, but also after removing people from danger.
This is one of the many stories that lifeguards live on the beaches every summer. Stories that often never reach the public eye, but prove how important their presence is on organized beaches.
“A big thank you to Sofia from the people she helped and a big thumbs up from all of us,” noted kefaloniaPress at the end of its exclusive report.
