The Municipality of Athens has launched Parkout, a free digital application designed to help drivers find parking spaces in areas where controlled parking is not in effect.
The system relies on communication among drivers rather than a management company.
Drivers who are about to leave a parking space can use the application to report that a spot is becoming available. Other drivers searching in the same area can then see available spaces in real time.

Parkout does not operate in central Athens or in several neighborhoods covered by parking restrictions, but it is available in a range of other districts across the city. The application can be downloaded from letsparkout.com.

According to the Municipality of Athens, the application could reduce parking search times if drivers choose to participate.
Media report on Wednesday that according to available data, on the first day of operation of the new system on Monday, July 6, a total of 2,621 people “downloaded” the Parkout application. 214 of them used it (parked – unparked). By yesterday, Tuesday, the application’s users had reached 3,500 and 385 “swapped” parking places.
