More than 157 people illegally obtained driving licenses after paying a bribe between 400 and 2,500 euros to employees of the Transport Directorate on the island of Corfu, in the Central Greece’s cities of Karditsa, Lamia and Trikala, as well as in Corinth and Lakonia, Peloponnese.
In many cases, the future drivers did not even bothered to be present at the exams after they stroke the deals with the rings of driving schools and corrupted state employees.
The price for the illegally obtained license ranged from 400 to 2,500 euros, depending on the category of the driving licenses.
The investigation covered the period from 2015 until May 2018.
It should be noted that a similar case revealed in the Attica Region, with 56 falsified driving license data.
Citing high-ranking sources from the Ministry of Transport, daily Eleftheros Typos writes that once the investigation procedure is concluded, these driving licenses will be revoked.
Investigation on the island of Corfu, for example, revealed that 16 employees at the Transport Directorate were bribed in order to issue new licenses for all possible driving categories, to extend licenses, approve licenses for buses and heavy transport vehicles.
Sixteen driving schools located on the island were also taken under the magnifying glass. some of the school owners said that the employees of the Directorate of Transport have been continuously receiving bribes.
“In order to not have the future driver fail in the exams, the employees would ask 20 euros for a motorcycle licenses and 50 euros for a car.
