Crete: Tavern owner rescues tourist’s life with Heimlich Maneuver (video)

A tavern owner in Crete rescued a tourist’s life with the Heimlich Maneuver. The tourist was sitting with a friend in a tavern in Kolymvari by Chania having lunch on Thursday.

At some point, the tourist fell unease and started chocking apparently due to a piece of food stuck in his throat.

The tavern owner noticed the incident, left aside what he was doing and ruched to help his customer.

With a Heimlich Maneuver, the tavern owner helped freeing the man’s throat tube and saved his life.

A few days ago, another tavern owner in the old port of Chania applied the same technique saving the life of another tourist.

According to parakritika, the first aid seminars offered by the Union of Restaurant Owners have proven life saving.

The Heimlich Maneuver is a first-aid procedure for dislodging an obstruction of the upper airways by a foreign object. The method consists of a sudden strong pressure applied on the person’s abdomen, between the navel and the ribcage.

The method was invented by US thorax surgeon Dr Henry Heimlich in 1974.
