The Corinth Canal is being fully reopened to maritime traffic as of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the managing company announced.
The reopening of the waterway was made possible following the successful completion of the main phase of critical restoration work and slope stabilization efforts.
The decision to resume vessel transits was taken after a systematic assessment of the progress of the engineering interventions. According to a company announcement, particular emphasis was placed on the canal’s importance for shipping, tourism, and the strengthening of the local economy during the summer season.
The same announcement stated that all major works directly related to the safe passage of vessels have been successfully completed. These interventions ensure the necessary conditions for the canal’s operation, in full compliance with the strictest current safety and operational-readiness standards.
“However, today’s reopening does not mark the end of the work. The overall programme for the modernisation and upgrading of the Corinth Canal is continuing as planned, in accordance with the original operational schedule. The objective of the ongoing works is the long-term protection and enhancement of infrastructure of both national and international significance, steadily strengthening its safety, functionality, and reliability,” the announcement emphasized.
The Corinth Canal has undergone several restoration works in the last couple of years due to landslides.
