Body of missing German citizen found in wild fire area in East Attica (UPD)

A macabre finding in the yard of a summer house in Neos Voutzas where the wild fire on July 2018 cost the lives of more than 100 people. A local electrician discovered a corpse when he went to the plot to reconnect electricity on Friday morning.

According to initial reports by local media, the corpse was burned down and suspicion emerged that the body belonged to a victim of last years’ fire. The house owner had reportedly not visited his house since last year.

However, later it turned out that the body belonged to a German citizen, a 77-year-old man, who was recently reported missing from a hospital in Athens.

According to news website newsit, police called to the scene found identification documents on the body.

At first sight, it seems that the German citizen had died of pathological causes, media report.

The man, whose name we cannot publish here until there is official confirmation, had disappeared from a hospital in central Athens on 13. June 2019. A Silver Alert was issued on 17. June. “His life is in danger,” the Alert noted.

It is not known whether he was a tourist or an expat permanent living in Greece. According to Skai TV he was from “Eretria,” in the opposite site of the Evian Gulf. Neos Voutzas is in East Attica, several kilometers away.

Police investigates the case.

UPDATE: According to latest information, the man was suffering from dementia and other serious health problems. He was a pensioner and lived in Eretria together with his wife, also a German citizen.
