Three fires in Attica; Civil Protection warning of “very high risk” for Aug31

Three wildfires broke out in Attica on Friday afternoon, with firefighters to have to work against the flames and the strong winds.

The wildfires broke out on Penteli Mountain near residence areas, in Artemida in North-East Attica and Tanagra in North-West of Athens.

In Penteli, the fire broke out in an area with garbage and dry grass. The fire is near residence homes something that concerns the Fire Service. Short before 7:00 pm the fire was under control.

The fire in Tanagra broke out at 4 o’ clock in the afternoon and is burning an area with low vegetation.

A little earlier, another fire broke out near the settlement of Agios Seraphim by Artemida. It is the second fire in the area in two days.

A total of 125 firefighters with trucks are trying to extinguish the fires while aerial mean are operating as well.

Forest and wild fires have broken out also in other regions of Greece.

In the last 24 hours, the Greek Fire Service had to intervene in 51 forest fires across the country.

The Geek Civil Protection had issued a warning of “high risk” of fires fro Friday, August 30, due to dryness, high temperatures and strong winds.

Another warning of very high risk of forest and wild fires has been issued for Saturday, August 31, 2019.

Affected are the following areas:

• Attica, Viotia, Evia, Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, Kythera, Lakonia, Argolida, Corinth

Orange marks “very high risk” of fires and Yellow “high risk.”

The summer north winds – meltemia- are forecast to weaken as of Sunday.
