Greece weather warning: Heavy rain & thunderstorms, stormy winds

Greece’s National Meteorological Service has issued a weather warning  about a new barometric low that will hit mostly southern Greece and the islands with powerful rainfalls and heavy storms, locally accompanied by hail and stormy winds of up to 9 Beaufort.

Affected by the bad weather front will be mainly the island groups of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese as well as the island of Crete.

The barometric low which is of rather short duration is coming from the South and thus the north coast of Africa and will initially strike Crete. The bad weather front will also bring Sahara dust and consequently also mud rainfalls.

Weather warning Jan 15-17, 2020

Wednesday, Jan 15

Strong rainfalls and thunderstorms as of the early morning hours of Wednesday will first affect the island of Crete, later the Cyclades and as of noon time the Dodecanese.

Thursday, Jan 16

Heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms  in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese.

Friday, Jan 17

Rainfalls and storms in the early morning hours in the Dodecanese. The phenomena will gradually weaken.

Wind

Stormy wind of 8 Beaufort and temporarily up to 9 B will blow in the southern Aegean Sea on Thursday, Jan 16.

Be informed that with wind intensity of 9 Beuafort nromally the sea traffic is halted. Sea travelers should contact local port authorities and travel agents.
