8 out of 10 Greek employers cannot find the right staff

Eight out of ten Greek employers looking to hire cannot find employees. In a global survey, Greece has ranked 3rd in the world in the difficulty of finding the right staff for 2019.

Nearly 8 in 10 employers in Greece find it difficult to get the right staff, the  Manpower Group International Talent Shortage Survey for 2019 has found.

77% is an 11-year record for Greece, the highest rate ever recorded since the start of the survey in 2008, with an increase of 16 points compared to 2018.

Regarding the most difficult to fill jobs, ‘Technicians’ occupy the 1st position, ‘Graduate Engineers’ occupy the 2nd position and ‘Professional Sellers & Marketing’ are in the 3rd position.

Greece has the largest talent shortage since 2008 (the start of the survey), with nearly 8 in 10 employers reporting that they are having difficulties..

Skills needs are changing faster than ever. Technological developments, digitization and automation are catalyzing the rapid change in the necessary technical qualifications. Jobs such as Technicians and Engineers, which are in high demand in Greece, cannot be filled due to a lack of supply of suitable skills.

At the global level, but also among the EMEA countries (Europe, the Middle East, Africa), “Top Craftsmen” are at the top of the positions for which employers find it more difficult to fill.

It is also noted that the position of ‘Professional Salespeople & Marketing’ is in the top three in Greece, EMEA countries and worldwide. In the third place in the world ranking is the position of “Technicians” where in Greece is in the 1st place. Finally, “Drivers” are the second most difficult to cover in EMEA countries.

“The difficulty of meeting the required talent is not only a domestic challenge for employers, but also a global one,” said Charalambos Kazantzidis, Manpower Group Greece CEO. “On the other hand, HR must focus on finding and implementing a multilevel talent identification, attraction and retention strategy …”

It is worth noting that the category “Construction Workers” comes for the first time in the list of the 10 most difficult jobs to cover in Greece.

PS Reasons not mentioned are: the 10-year-long Greek economic crisis that led to brain drain, ridiculously low wages as well as the massive departure of foreign construction workers as the construction sector was halted.

  1. Maybe these employers are having difficulty finding the right employees because they’re not willing to give them the pay they deserve?

  2. Your post script (PS) says it all.
