Coronavirus Greece: Confirmed cases rise to 1,415, death toll to 50

Greece’s health authorities announced 81 new cases that increasing the total number of coronavirus infections to 1,415. Among them are also 20 confirmed cases from the chartered ship Eleftherios Venizelos currently anchored off shore of the port of Piraeus.

One patient has died in the last 24 hours, the death toll has reached 50. Among the dead are 38 men and 12 women. 94% of them had underlying health issues.

The number of intubated patients has increased to 90. among them there are 14 women and the rest are men. 57% of them have underlying health problems.

A total of 17,350 tests have been conducted since the coronavirus outbreak in the country, said spokesman of National Health Organization and professor for Infectious Diseases Sotiris Tsiodras.

Concerning criticism on his statement on Tuesday about the use of masks, Tsiodras said that he cited the official position of the World Health Organization that only health workers, infected people and those taking care of infected should wear them.

He added that he addressed the European Center of Infectious Diseases to take official position on the issue.

Head of Civild Protection Nikos Hardalias announced that the community of Foustani by Edessa, West Macedonia is placed into a 14-day quarantine due to an increase “virus load.”

Hardalias announced also that no private aircraft and helicopters will be allowed to land on islands without confirmed cases.
