CAS rules: Hotels around Acropolis no higher than 21m, no pools on roofs

Hotels and other buildings at the foot of the Acropolis will not be allowed to be higher that 21 meters, neither will be allowed to have swimming pools on their roof tops.

Members of the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) have unanimously approved on Tuesday, the “Special Presidential Decree for determining heights within a demarcated area surrounding the Acropolis, specifically the Makrigianni/Koukaki area..

According to the plan, the height of the buildings around the Acropolis in this area is set at 21 meters and 24 meters for a section on Syggrou Avenue.

Swimming pools may not be built on their roofs.

However, auxiliary constructions (eg stairwell ends) will be allowed. The construction area cannot exceed 35 square meter, and plants cannot be higher than one meter.

The whole debate started when residents in the area put pressure in 2019 that one 9-storey hotel under construction was blocking the view to the Acropolis.

Last April, the CAS ruled that the hotel that was meanwhile in operation had to demolish two floors.

Construction license sin the area need also the approval of the Central Archaeological Council.

Amid the economic crisis, the Greek government had given the green light for the contribution of hotels around the Acropolis in an effort to attract investors.
