ELSTAT: Business sectors in Greece mostly hit by the pandemic lockdown

The Greek Statistics Authority (ELSTAT) announced data on the evolution of turnover of enterprises under under suspension of operation due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The current publication incorporates the most recent data on turnover from the period of the lockdown implementation (March-April 2020) and during the period of the gradual lifting of these measures (May 2020).

The published data highlights, on the one hand, which enterprises suffered more, in terms of turnover decrease, during the implementation period of the confinement measures and on the other hand, which enterprises recovered faster or slower upon the gradual lifting of these measures.

From the 205,984 enterprises that were under suspension of operation, the enterprises in the activity classes of Education and of Activities of membership organizations had their turnover increased per 0.6% and 3.1% respectively in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the first quarter of 2019.

Enterprises in the activity class Creative arts and entertainment activities recorded the smallest decrease in turnover, 3.5%, between the first quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2019, while the enterprises of the Accommodation activity class recorded the largest decrease, 19.1%,

For the enterprises under suspension of operation, obliged to double-entry accounting bookkeeping, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the enterprises in the activity class Creative arts and entertainment activities recorded the smallest decrease in turnover, 11.6%, between March 2020 and March 2019, while the enterprises in the activity class Office administrative, office support and other business support activities recorded the largest decrease in turnover, 67.3%, between March 2020 and March 2019.
