Coronavirus infections recorded a sharp increase in the last 24 hours, with Greece’s health authorities to announce 55 new confirmed cases and two more deaths on Wednesday evening. The number of total infections stands 3,203 and the death toll at 187.
The overwhelming majority of the new cases have been reportedly recorded in the Prefectures of Xanthi and Rodopi in north-eastern Greece, Two communities in these areas, Echinos and Agiasma, have been already placed in a soft lockdown quarantine and night curfew., Two of the last victims to have died in the last 24 hours were from the village of Echinos in mountainous Xanthi.
According to media information, the new 55 confirmed coronavirus cases are:
43 in Xanthi, 6 in Rodopi (Thrace), 3 in Pella (West Macedonia), 2 in Athens and 1 in a flight from abroad.
According to the statement by the Greek Health Ministry on Wednesday, 55.2% of the total infections are men.
Of the total cases, 698 are related to travel abroad and 1,796 were infected by already known cases.
11 patients are intubated in hospitals Intensive Care Units. Their average age is 69, among them are four women. 72.7% of them have underlying health issues or are over 70 years old.
A total of 117 patients have been discharged from intensive care units.
Among the 187 deceased were 57 women.
Average age of the deceased 76, the overwhelming majority, 95.5%, had underlying health problem and/or were over 70 years old.
