Greek Air Force rescues British climber fallen into Samothrace gorge (video)

Greek Air Force deployed a Super Puma helicopter to rescue a British climber from a gorge on the island of Samothrace. The man was hiking with a friend when he fell into the rocks of the gorge, in a depth of some 10 meters.

He remained trapped for two days, until the help came from the sky on Saturday morning.

The accident took place last Thursday night. His friend, a Greek-Danish national, had no signal on his mobile and managed to find another Greek climber who called the Fire Service and gave the coordinates to rescue teams.

The Air Force Super Puma was called to the spot, but due to the very inaccessible spot and because it started to get dark, it was impossible to rescue the climber.

The rescue was finally carried out early Saturday morning. The British tourist was transported injured to the General University Hospital of Alexandroupolis.

“It was a miracle that this man survived such a fall. We asked for the assistance of the 4th EMAK and after a course of 10 hours we located them at the 6th waterfall. He was completely exhausted and dehydrated, “the commander of the Samothrace Fire Brigade, Pantelis Theofanidis, told state broadcaster ERT TV.
