Greece registers 841 new coronavirus cases and 10 more deaths

Daily coronavirus cases has been stuck over 800 in the last days, and Greece’s health authorities announced 841 new confirmed cases  and 10 more deaths on Friday evening.

The total cases have increased to 29,057 and death toll to 559.

Of the new cases, 43 were detected among tourists.

Attica is again on top of the list with 290 new cases, followed by Thessaloniki that shows a rapid increased with 197 new cases.

There are concerns that Thessaloniki is at high risk to changed category from “increased monitoring” 3 to “increase threat” 4 and be placed in lockdown – an economic disaster for the second biggest city in the country.

Authorities consider the next 10 days as “crucial” as it will be shown whether the strict measures imposed on  some 18 regional units will manage to contain the spread of the virus or not.

New Measures: Night Curfew, masks

In a televised address to the nation Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced two new measures: on Thursday evening: night curfew and the mandatory use of masks in- and outdoors. See details here.

According to the official daily bulletin on Friday, 3777 (13%) of the total coronavirus cases are related to travel abroad and 11354 (39.1%) are related to already known infection case.

55.5% of the infected are men.

The number of intubated patients in ICUs is 89 from 90 a day earlier. Their average age is 66, among them are 31 women. 93.3% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.

268 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

Ten more deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 559.  Of the deceased 209 were women. The average age of the deceased was 79 and 96.2% of the deceased had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.

Rolling weekly average cases at 659 from 384 last week.

Total tests since begin of outbreak are 1,629,484.

Tests in the last 24 hours: 20,440 with 4.11% of them positive. A good, normal number with less reason for concerns is when positive is below 2%.

Daily growth at +3%.

Geographical distribution October 23

Of the 882 new coronavirus cases, 99 are related to known clusters and 52 were detected at the country’s entry points.

Majority of new cases are recorded in Attica

43 of the new cases were detected at entry points; another 0 travelers already in the country sought laboratories after they developed symptoms.
