Daily coronavirus cases in Greece jump to 935! Death toll rises to 564

With 935 new coronavirus cases on Saturday Greece struck a new all times record of daily cases and the total infections increased to almost 30,000 minus 8. Health authorities announced also 5 more deaths in the past 24 hours. Four of the deceased died within a few hours in Athens.

The total cases have increased to 29,992 and death toll to 564.

Among the new coronavirus cases are 48 tourists.

There are currently 7900 active cases with 60% of them (4700) to be without known source of contamination.

Attica is again on top of the list with 228 new cases, closely followed by Thessaloniki that shows a rapid increased with 217 new cases. 51% of the active cases in Thessaloniki are aged 16-29, while those over 60 are just 6%.

Speaking to Open TV, to Health Ministry spokesman Gkikas Majiorkinis,Majiorkinis said that 50% of the active cases belong to the age group 18-30 and that “young people in our country get infected twice more easily than other age groups. He added that the young generations transmit the virus to the next generations mostly within their families.

Authorities consider the next 10 days as “crucial” as it will be shown whether the strict measures imposed in some 18 regional units will manage to contain the spread of the virus or not.

A few days ago, experts warned that daily cases could soon reach 4-digit.

New Measures: Night Curfew, masks

In a televised address to the nation Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced two new measures: on Thursday evening: night curfew and the mandatory use of masks in- and outdoors. See details here.

According to the official daily bulletin on Saturday, 3828  (12.8%) of the total coronavirus cases are related to travel abroad and 11532 (38.5%) are related to already known infection case.

55.5% of the infected are men.

The number of intubated patients in ICUs is 91 from 89 a day earlier. Their average age is 66, among them are 30 women. 93.4% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.

Among the 91 intubated Covid-19 patients are also two in the age group 18-39.

270 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

Five more deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 564.  Of the deceased 213 were women. The average age of the deceased was 79 and 96.3% of the deceased had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.

Rolling weekly average cases at 724 from 409 last week.

Total tests since begin of outbreak are 1,649,561.

Tests in the last 24 hours: 20,072 with 4.66% of them positive. A good, normal number with less reason for concerns is when positive is below 2%.

Daily growth at +3.2%.

Of the 935 new coronavirus cases, 47 are related to known clusters and 44 were detected at the country’s entry points.

44 of the new cases were detected at entry points; another 4 travelers already in the country sought laboratories after they developed symptoms.
