Greece’s Hospital workers demand mass recruitment due to pandemic

Workers in Greece’s public hospitals mobilized on Thursday demanding more personnel and more measures against the pandemic.

The protest took place on the background of 10 health workers who died of Covid-19 in hospitals across the country, another 9 currently intubated in ICUs. At the same time they denounce that thousands have been infected with the virus and hundreds have been hospitalized in coronavirus clinics.

Members of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees gathered at the gates of main hospitals in Athens and in other Greek cities.

The mobilizations in the hospitals were also supported by the Federation of Associations of Hospital Doctors of Greece (OENGE).

Worth noting that the government has invited private doctors to join the fight against the pandemic in public hospitals with higher salaries than the permanent personnel. However, these doctors are to work with temporary contracts of some 6 months or for as long the pandemic will keep putting pressure on the country’s health care system.
