New coronavirus cases in Greece recorded a huge jump reaching 1,261 on Tuesday; that is 718 more cases than a day earlier. Greece’s health authorities announced on Tuesday evening also 22 more deaths in the last 24 hours. The number of Covid-19 patients intubated in hospitals across the country stands at 244.
Death toll has reached 5,851 and the total cases stand at 158,716.

New spike in Attica and greater Athens seen in the graph below. the Regional unit is in tougher lockdown since Saturday, Jan 30, 2021.

Analysis of 96 samples from Attica and Thessaloniki between Jan 19-27
31 positive to VOC 202012/01 (Lineage B.1.1.7) in Attica. Of them 7 samples came from hospitals and 24 from Health Centers.
A total of 204 samples positive to mutated strain B.1.1.7/UK lineage.
1 sample tested positive to mutated strain of SARC-C, B.1.351/South Africa lineage.

According to the official daily bulletin 5988 (3.8%) of the total coronavirus cases are related to travel abroad and 49885 (63.9%) are related to already known infection case.
The remaining infections are without known source.
52.0% of the infected are men.
The number of intubated patients in ICUs stands at 244 from 248 a day earlier. Their average age is 70, among them are 178(73.0%) men. 86.5% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.
1,131 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.
Another 22 deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 5851. Of the deceased 3437(58.7%) were men. The average age of the deceased was 79 and 95.5% of them had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.
