Greece records 1585 news coronavirus cases, 40 deaths; authorities warn 5 islands

Greece’s health authorities announced on Friday evening 1,585 new coronavirus cases and 40 Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients has further decreased to 521.

Live Briefing

At the Live Briefing on Friday, health experts stressed that the number of daily infections, deaths and intubated Covid-patients is constantly decreasing.

However, they urged citizens to comply further with safety measures as the pandemic is still here.

Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias warned that in 5 municipalities the number of infections has increased in the last 5 days.

There municipalities are: Rhodes, Lsvos, Syros, Troizinia (-Methana/Saronic islands) and Chania (Crete).

The number of active cases has increased by 43% in Rhodes, 36% in Lesvos, 50% in Syros, 26% in Chania. In Troizinia, active cases have tripled in last 5 days, Hardalias said.

He urged residents on these islands and municipalities to caution and implementation of protection measures.

Deputy Health Minister Vasislis Kontozamanis confirmed that Athenians travel to nearby islands to receive vaccination with single-jab vaccine of Johnson & Johnson. He said that this does not put pressure to the J&J availability on the islands.

  1. So stop the influx of tourists — I haven’t seen one single tourist wearing a mask in the last few weeks (and every single permanent resident of Crete has to wear one or get fined). It’s not rocket science !!! So — I’m stocking up my freezer ready for the next big lockdown once the tourist season ends.

    • Joanna, you are very negative. All over Europe the numbers improve and vaccination is progressing. So time to get back to normal. And in the Netherlands, you don’t wear a mask outside, only in the shops.
So, let’s open Europe and let tourists come to Greece, we need it (as I’m not on retirement)!

      • Preveli, you need to look at why the numbers are going down in greece …..it is NOT because covid has gone away! You are going to have the perfect covid storm here. The numbers depend on testing ……it goes down every week! hence the positive numbers go down. There is no point having a thriving tourist season when everyone is ill and dying. Think about it.

        • Testing goes down because when people are not ill they don’t get tested.

It is clear that vaccination is the reason that numbers of cases, hospitalisations and deaths are going down.

      • Preveli, numbers are not going down everywhere. Thanks to KTG I track the numbers on Crete, which is Greece’s biggest tourist destination and where I live. Measured per 100,000 population in a 14 day period both Heraklion and Chania are approximately flat at around 200, Rethymnon is steadily increasing and is now around 250 and only Lasithi is going down but is still above 50. The average for the whole of Crete is also approximately flat at around 200. These are extremely high figures to allow completely free movement.

    • I agree – we were in our local town last Saturday and although the Greeks were wearing masks (some under their chin) the foreign tourists has no mask at all! NOTHING!

  2. Last week we learnt of a noticeable reduction in PCR and rapid testing from the week before, namely a weekly reduction of 47,255 tests. There were 12,256 less PCR tests and 34,999 less rapid tests.

This week the testing falls further from that new low figure. On top of the above reduction there was a further reduction of 24,703 tests. There were 7,044 less PCR tests and 17,659 less rapid tests.

So in the past 7 days there were 71,958 less tests than the week in which we opened for tourism.

    • Joanna, you have every right to be worried when most tourists do not even carry a mask and the police are taking NO action against the offenders. Naxos reported its worst month ever in April with 46 officially announced cases. So far in May, there have been 70 recorded cases on Naxos but we are told that the virus is beaten and a tourist dollar is worth a thousand masks however many deaths it takes to pretend that Greece has won the Covid war !!

  3. Shopping in Rethymnon, Crete this afternoon. Tourists in abundance not wearing masks and not a police in sight. How do you recognise the locals? Easy, they are the ones wearing masks! There is no point in the government putting safety measures in place if no one is going to enforce them. It would be interesting to see how many (if any) fines have been issued recently!
