Crete: 6 coronavirus infections in nursing home; hospitals under pressure

Five elderly and one member of the staff at a private nursing home in Lasithi, eastern Crete. All cases were found to have been infected with the Delta strain of the coronavirus.

Covid-19 tests carried out to the remaining staff and the elderly were reportedly negative.

Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, the owner of the home in the village Kalogeroi  said that all 15 workers there were fully vaccinated.

It is unclear if also all the elderly, positive or negative to Covid-19, were vaccinated too.

The infected elderly are to be isolated.

So far, none of them has been transferred to the Covid-19 department of the hospital in Ierapetra.

Cretan Hospitals under pressure

The island of Crete faces a constant increase of infections with the Civil Protection to have imposed  a so-called “mini lockdown” to two our of four in total regional units, that is in Heraklio and Chania.

According to local media cretapost, there are currently 183 people hospitalized for Covid-19 across the island. Of them, 158 patients are in Covid-19 clinics, 25 in Intensive Care Units and 18 of them intubated.

A local high-ranking health official told cretapost that hospitals on the island no longer accept Covid-patients from other islands and did not rule out “at some moment to have to trasnfer patients to ICUs outside Crete.”

The situation on the island is “critical,” and there have been 4,000 infections since the beginning of August, the local media reported..
