Greek police investigates foul play in death of soccer player Nikos Tsoumanis (UPD)

Greek Police in Thessaloniki are investigating the suspected murder of a local soccer player who was found dead in his car at the marina of Nea Krini in the suburb of Kalamaria on Tuesday morning.

Nikos Tsoumanis, 30, was found with three tire ups around his neck, ethnos newspaper reported.

A preliminary autopsy showed that his death was caused by asphyxiation, a thorough examination is still due.

Initially it was thought that the soccer player had committed suicide.

According to media, Tsoumanis had been reported missing to police by his girl friend and family on Monday afternoon.

His car was located by a police patrol early on Tuesday.

Video: some laid flowers on the car before it was removed.

A friend told Mega TV Tuesday afternoon that the young man had some financial issues but debt but not an amount that was unmanageable. The friend said he had offered help and that Tsoumanis was planning to get married.

The left back was playing for Makedonikos this season and had previously been at Aris and Apollonas, among other teams.

Tsoumanis’ death has shocked the soccer world.

the shock will be even bigger if investigation proves that he was murdered.
