Protesters demand Justice for Femicide victims in Greece

Several women organizations and feminist groups gathered outside the Parliament on Friday night to protest the murders of women by their partners or family members. Demanding “justice, equality and prevention” the protesters urged the government to take measures against the femicide in Greece that cost the lives of 17 women  alone in 2021.

“No more femicide”

Holding candles and banners protesters chanted slogans such as, “Say it by its true name, it’s femicide! Nothing less,” and “No more macho bullying!”

Protesters carried signs with the numbers 1 to 17 to highlight the number of the victims.

The names of the victims and the circumstances of their deaths were read out by two actors, Loukia Pitsiola and Leonidas Kakouris.

Participants included the mother of Garyfallia, 26, a young woman killed by her boyfriend on the island of Folegandros in the summer of 2021, and the mother of Erato, who was killed by her partner on Lesvos island in 2019.

A message of support was sent by the parents of Eleni Topaloudi, who was murdered on Rhodes island in 2018. Garyfallia’s mother called for “a life sentence that is truly a life sentence,” and “the recognition of the term “femicide.”

It should be noted that with the big publicity femicide murders and #metoo cases receive, more and more women find the courage to escape toxic relationships before it’s too late.

On the island of Crete, a 59-year-old man beat and injured his 43-year-old partner because he wanted ‘french fries’ for lunch, but she cooked ‘fish-soup’ instead. the victim filed against him to police and the prosecutor of Heraklio sentenced him to 18 months, however, on suspension, and restrain order. the couple has three minor children.
