Greece saw an alarming increase of femicide in 2021, when 17 women were killed by current or former partners.

While the woman in Ioannina is the first femicide victim in 2022, incidents of violence against of women by even ex partners has been almost daily since the beginning of the year.

In the latest incident, a 34-year-old woman was heavily beaten by a former partner in Heraklio Crete. The perpetrator reportedly visited the woman in her home late on Sunday, punched her in the face and threw her on the floor where he continued kicking her. He left her injured in front of her 6-month-old baby and fled the scene.

Women organizations in Greece demand heavier punishment for perpetrators and the recognition of the term femicide.

However, the conservative Greek government has not moved a finger to this direction.
