Greece unequivocally condemns Russia’s attack on Ukraine

Greece unequivocally condemns the Russian attack on Ukraine that threatens the stability in Europe, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement just hours after the sirens of war rang alarm after decades in the old continent.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chaired an emergency meeting of the National Foreign Affair and Defense Council (KYSEA), the second in three days, and Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias interrupted his visit to Africa to return to Athens.

At the KYSEA meeting, the PM reiterated that Greece will coordinate with the European Union and NATO for a response that will be “proportional to the unprecedented Russian provocation.”
He expressed concern about the ethnic Greeks who live in the area of Mariupol, one of the cities currently under attack.

“As a matter of principle, Greece respects the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of all countries. It therefore unequivocally condemns revisionist actions that run counter to these values,” Mitsotakis said at the start of an emergency meeting of the country’s top decision-making body  to discuss Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.

Greek Foreign Ministry Statement

“The protection of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of all states is a fundamental principle for Greece.

Greece will always condemn any violation of these basic principles as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

We call on the Russian side to immediately end the hostilities, which, in addition to their other serious consequences, endanger the lives of civilians, including the Greek community living in Ukraine.

We express solidarity with Ukraine and we will continue to stand by the Greek community in Ukraine in these difficult times.

We are in constant coordination with our European partners and NATO allies on the response to the violation of international law.

Greek diplomatic representations in Ukraine (embassies in Kiev, Consulates General in Mariupol and Odessa) are in constant contact with Greek citizens and holders of Special Expatriate Identity Cards in order to provide them with all possible assistance,” the Foreign Ministry statement said.

Two days ago, the Foreign Ministry urged Greek nationals to either leave Ukraine or contact the diplomatic representations. Contact details here.

  1. War and fighting is terrible anyway! These are destruction, victims, broken destinies of people. This is grief of people! We are very sorry for the citizens of Ukraine.
The actions of states and the work of politicians should be aimed at ensuring the security of their citizens. But in Ukraine now the situation is reversed. Everything is clear with the actions of Russia. But now I want to recall the promises of the USA and NATO command to protect and to support Ukraine and its citizens. Where is all this in practice?
As we see, Ukraine and its people are left alone with their problems. No action and no support. The USA as always won’t fulfill their promises, because it’s not profitable for them to get involved in this conflict! And what happens if we are get attacked? They won’t support us and won’t protect us, because this isn’t profitable for them! There will be only promises and assurances, but no real actions.
