Chairman of conservative EPP calls for arms embargo on Turkey

Manfred Weber, the chairman of European Parliament conservative party European People’s Party, called on the European Council to consider an arms embargo on Turkey.

Briefing correspondents in Brussels, EPP’s chairman Weber said “it is unacceptable and provocative for Ankara to threaten Greece with war and to raise the issue of its sovereignty over its islands.”

That stance should lead member states to discuss an arms embargo against Turkey..

The European Council is scheduled to hold its Summit on June 23-24

Media report that the EU leaders will issue a clear warning to Turkey and its provocative attitude towards Greece, according to the draft conclusions of the Summit to be held on June 23rd and 24th in Brussels.

EU news website, euractiv revealed on Wednesday, that the draft conclusions of the Summit state:

“The European Council has expressed deep concern over Turkey’s repeated recent actions and statements. Turkey must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all EU member states.”

It also recalled its  previous conclusions and the declaration of 25 March 2021, stressing that The Council “expects Turkey to fully respect international law, to de-escalate tensions in the interests of regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and to promote good relations. in a sustainable way.”

PS If I’m not wrong Weber has been calling for arms embargo on Turkey once a year – at least.
