Coronavirus cases in Greece rose to 20,084 plus 3,664 reinfactions to a total of 23,748 in the last 24 hours, health authorities announced on Tuesday. The number of covid-patients’ deaths rose to 16 in the same period. The number of intubations in hospitals ICUs stands at 95.
Health experts warn of 25,000 or even up to 30,000 infections per day.
Member of the Epidemiologists’ Committee Gkikas Majorkinis spoke of an average of 20,000-25,000 infections. He stressed that currently no measures are needed but left open this possibility if there are 250-300 Covid-patients in ICUs, Star TV reported.
Dimosthenis Sarigiannis, Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, told Real FM, that he expects the summer wave of the pandemic to peak until mid-July and that infections will double on a weekly basis.
He said that he expected a de-escalation after that he stressed, however, that “the continuation in August will depend on the evolution of the pandemic in the countries of origin of the tourists who will arrive in Greece for holidays.”
Sarigiannis added that infections increase will bring a rapid increase of hospital admissions in normal Covid-wards and ICUs and estimated that “by the end of July or the beginning of August, 400 intubated patients will be treated in the ICUs.”

Reinfections
Reinfections are estimated at 3,664 in the last 24 hours, while their total since the pandemic began is estimated at 165,417 (4.3% of the total positive results).

16 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours brought the total of pandemic victims to 30,206. Of these, 95.7% had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.
95 Covid-patients are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 71 years and 91.6% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over.
Of the total in intubation, 43 (43.16%) are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated and 54 (56.84%) are fully vaccinated.
4,726 have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.
231 Covid-patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change: +10.0%. The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 208.
The median age of new infections is 37 years (range: 0.2 to 112 years), while the median age of the deceased is 80 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).
