WWF Greece: Plastic straws flood the market, bypassing single-use plastic ban

WWF Greece has complained that plastic straws have filled the market despite their ban since 2021, when Greece was one of the first countries to incorporate the EU directive on the single-use plastics into national law

Greece was one of the first countries to incorporate into national law the directive on single-use plastics, but plastic straws hold up well.

According to the WWF Greece complaint, a plastic straw import ring has flooded the market with plastic straws, taking advantage of some ambiguous points in the government’s law.

The ring imports and sells straws made of plastic material, a little thicker than that used in disposable plastics.

These straws can be washed and used again. Therefore they are considered as multi-purpose plastic straws and cam be sold legally and normally on the market.

It is worth noting that single-use plastic items (cutlery, plates, straws, drink stirrers, balloon holders, styrofoam food and drink containers) should have been phased out by last May at the latest, OPEN TV that presented the WWF Greece complaint said on Friday morning.

Withdrawal of single plastic use in Greece started in July 2021, on the papers rather….

PS However, we still receive singe-use plastic cutlery from some delivery eateries even if we don’t ask for.

  1. Grab those plastic straws while you can folks since plastic will become an endangered species without oil :-((
It’s been pretty silly drinking from plastic cups with plastic caps…. through wilting paper straws.

  2. If petroleum consumption for fuel decreases, then the industry will turn more to production of plastics. Some states in Brazil a few years ago tried to outlaw plastic bags at supermarkets! It lasted about a week! Oil industry’s lobby is too powerful.

  3. what about the styropor fishboxes all over spread on the beaches a must from EU

  4. I’m fed up of having to say no to plastic straws. why do I even need a straw to drink a Freddo espresso? I dont need one and nor does anyone else.
