Police in the city of Chania on the island of Crete arrested on Sunday one young Greek man for the rape of a tourist from Sweden.
The 21-year-old victim filed a lawsuit and forensic examination confirmed her complaint.
The arrestee is aged 23, while a second perpetrator who allegedly participated in the rape, a 19-year-old, is still on the run on Sunday night.
According to the information obtained by local media zarpanews.gr, the young woman was at a bar in Chania on Friday night where she met the two Greeks.
According to the same sources, the victim had allegedly consumed a quantity of alcohol and the young men offered to take her to the hotel where she was staying, in the area of Gerani.
However, as she told the authorities, they took her to a secluded spot in the area of Platania, where they raped her; one of them also beat her when she started screaming.
When the perpetrators fled, she managed to call a friend with whom she was on vacation with and was hanging out at the bar. The victim’s friend had left the bar for the hotel alone.
Both women turned to the police station of Platania.
The case was taken over by the Chania security agency, which within a short period of time identified the two men and arrested one of the perpretrators
The 23-year-old man, was arrested on Sunday morning, and was taken to prosecutor at noon after the victim recognized him.
He reportedly faces charges of abuse of person incapable of resisting due to drunkenness and criminal prosecution for personal injuries. He is to testify on Tuesday.
News website in.gr reported that according to his lawyer, the arrestee seems to deny that there was sexual intercourse but with her consent.
However, according to state broadcaster ERT, the medical examiner has found that the victim had been abused.
The second perpetrator, the 19-year-old, seems to be still on the run on Sunday night, even though some media had earlier reported that he was also arrested.
