Unknown arsonists have set fire to a car belonging to a diplomat of the Italian Embassy in Athens in the early morning hours of Friday. The Greek Foreign Ministry condemned the attack.
The vehicle was parked in the parking lot of an apartment building in Papagou suburb in the north of the Greek capital.
With 6 vehicles and 18 firefighters, the Fire Service responded immediately and brought the flames under control.

The fire completely destroyed the car and damaged another adjacent vehicle.
Police are investigating the incident and the motive for the arson attack.
According to a statement from the Italian embassy, the vehicle belongs to an Italian diplomat. The car was completely destroyed, while the fire also caused damage to an adjacent vehicle.
Authorities found bottles of flammable liquid, lighters and matches nearby.

Foreign Ministry announcement
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying:
“We unequivocally condemn yesterday’s attack against a vehicle belonging to a member of the diplomatic staff of the Italian Embassy in Athens.
Unacceptable and reprehensible actions, such as the above, are not going to disturb in any way the excellent relations and the timeless bonds of friendship between Greece and its partner and ally Italy,” the announcement stated.
