Greece;s health authorities announced on Tuesday 43,748 coronavirus cases confirmed in the week November 28 to December 4, ISO week 48/2022.
Media pointed out that many infected patients get a positive coronavirus result via a self-test and that they don’t even bother to report it to health authorities.
It is also worth noting that the percentage of reinfections has started to increase – currently at 28% – and infected and/or reinfected patients are meanwhile accustomed with the testing at home (as well as the disease?).
According to the weekly report by the National Public Health Organization (EODY), 154 Covid-patients died in the same period of time, while the number of intubated patients stood at 91 on December 4.

The 43,748 coronavirus cases are equivalent to 4,193 coronavirus cases per 1 mln people (weekly change: -1%), with 28% of the new weekly infections being reinfections.
All confirmed infections since the pandemic began are 5,448,700.
A total of 1,188 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital during the week of November 28-December 4, while the total number of Covid-19 patients discharged from hospitals for the same week was 1,056 (151 as weekly average, or -16% compared to previous week).
91 hospital patients were on ventilators on December 4. Their median age is 76 years and 98.9% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or more.
During ISO week 48/2022, a total of 154 deaths from Covid-19, or 15 deaths per 1 mln people (weekly change: 19%) were recorded, bringing the total of pandemic victims since the pandemic began to 34,482.
Of the people who died, 96.1% had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or more.
The median age of those who were infected was 39 years of age, and of those who died it was 80.
Prevailing sub-variants
New increase in BQ1 sub-variants
According to the latest data via the National Network of Genomic Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on the mutations of the coronavirus and the spread of Omicron sub-variants in the country in the period weeks 9-10/2022 (when the Omicron mutation fully prevailed) until weeks 47-48.2022:
based on 14,883 samples genomically analyzed.
From week 36/2022 onward, the BA.2 strain shows an increase, while the BA.5 shows a relative decrease.
The BA.5 strain is still the most frequently identified.
Regarding the temporal evolution of the sub-variants of the BA.5 strain, in week 39 the sub-variant BQ.1 appeared and then BQ.1.1., which shows an increase in relation to the other sub-variants of the BA.5 strain
