With an urgent request, the president of Greece’s Anti-money Laundering Authority has asked authorities in Panama to provide information on whether an amount totaling 20 million euros have been transferred from Qatar to bank accounts, which may have been opened in the name of Eva Kaili and partner Francesco Giorgi.
The honorary deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Charalambos Vourliotis, is looking for traces of the money, which possibly reach as far as Panama and may be related to Qatargate.
Citing sources, media report that the request in question was sent by Vourliotis to his counterpart in Panama two days ago.
The request is in the context of the coordinated investigations that are in full progress for the investigation of any information related to financial data and that may they are related to the case which is at the center of the investigations, not only for the Belgian, but also for the Greek authorities.
It is worth noting, however, that Eva Kaili’s Greek lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, has right from the beginning questioned the authenticity of the disputed bank documents that were published on internet.
It is noted that the issue with the bank documents regarding accounts in the name of Eva Kaili, her mother and father caused the strong reaction.
Lawyer Dimitrakopoulos stated that the documents showing the transfer of money from the official state of Qatar, to the Bank of Qatar and then in transfers to three bank accounts in Panama, to Eva Kaili, her mother and her father, are “most obvious fake.”.
The lawyer had announced that he would request the Anti-Money Laundering Authority to send the relevant request to Panama authorities.
According to media, Vourliotis has also informed Belgian authorities at the request of the Belgian prosecutor, about the actions Greece has taken so far. the briefing was requested ahead of re-examining Kaili’s temporary custody on January 22, 2023.
These actions include the freezing of the accounts and assets of the former vice-president of the European Parliament and members of her family in Greece, including the seven-acre plot of land on the island of Paros.
