MEP Eva Kaili also faces probe into EU funds fraud

Next to Qatar-gate investigation, Greek MEP Eva Kaili faces also probe for misappropriating European Parliament funds, falsifying her assistants’ expenses, Politico reports on Tuesday.

POLITICO has obtained documents showing Kaili is accused of taking a cut from her assistants’ salaries and their faked reimbursement requests.

According to politico, Eva Kaili owes the European Parliament “around €100,000” in a criminal probe into potential fraud. The investigation is looking at suspicious payments involving her MEP assistants spanning 2014-2020.

Citing a letter from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) addressed to Parliament President Roberta Metsola that has been seen by Politico, the report indicated that the probe against Kaili is centered on payments connected to four of her assistants.

The investigation concerns the period from 2014 to 2020 and involves around 100,000 euros.

It seeks to ascertain whether Kaili lied about her assistants’ work activities and movements, and took cuts from their salaries and reimbursements for work trips that never took place.
