A tourist couple locked their baby in the car and went for a walk in the Venetian harbor of Chania with their older child. The baby narrowly escape a heat stroke, while the parents were first detained and then released pending trial.
The baby was rescued from almost a certain death due to intervention of passersby and police officers.
The incident happened early Sunday evening, when passers-by spotted a crying baby alone inside a locked car. They immediately called police that rushed to the spot, local media zarpanews.gr reported.
Having no other solution, they broke the window of the car and took the baby out.
Residents told police that the car was parked there for quite some time.
After a while, the baby’s parents, a 43-year-old couple from Japan, also arrived at the scene.
The couple was taken to the Security department of Chania for exposing a minor to danger. After a strong recommendation from the police, the couple was released, however, they will face a trial.
“The parents remained speechless, reserved as if nothing had happened,” Nikos Xanthoudakis, President of the Police Officers of Chania, told ANT1 TV on Monday morning.
“The police saw a crying baby inside a locked car. Windows were closed, everything closed, and with 35 degrees Celsious outside. As you can understand, if my colleagues hadn’t intervened immediately, the baby might have been dead,” Xanthoudakis underlined.
They shouldn’t have had any children. How is it possible you can even think about leaving your child locked in your car! 😡😡
