Heatwave in Greece: Maximum temperatures reach 40°-42°C on July 13

26 weather stations in Greece registered on Thursday temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius in areas of Athens and Attica, Larissa in central Greece and Viotia as a prolonged heatwave hits the country.

The heatwave started on Wednesday and temperatures rose further on Thursday, 13. July 2023, throughout the country.

According to a network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo service,  the maximum temperatures fluctuated at very high levels, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many areas.

As shown in the map below, 168 weather stations recorded highs above 37°C while 26 weather stations recorded highs above 40°C. The absolute maximum temperature was recorded in Larissa and was equal to 42°C .

Temperatures that locally exceeded 40 °C were also noted in the wider area of Attica during the midday hours of Thursday 13/07, as recorded by the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens and presented on the Observation Map of the Integrated Information System and Weather Warning.

The Integrated Weather Information and Warning System developed by the Meteo team of the National Observatory of Athens in collaboration with the Region of Attica, aims to inform and warn the population in time about severe weather phenomena (temperature, precipitation, wind gusts), but and recording the current meteorological conditions for Attica and its wider region.
