The fire on the island of Zakynthos has been largely contained is largely under control on Saturday morning after firefighters battled against the flames throughout the night. Firefighting forces remain in the area to prevent rekindling. Locals speak of “arson”.
The fire broke out in an area of low-vegetation and olive groves in Tsilivi near Akrotiri.
As the flames came very close to houses, tourist accommodations and businesses of Tsilivi village, the Civil Protection ordered the evacuation of the area via an <112> message.
The immediate intervention of firefighters prevented the worst.
23 firefighters and 10 vehicles operated in the area along with local volunteers. The forces were later strengthened with another 16 firefighters, one team on foot and 4 vehicles that arrived on Zakynthos by boat.
2 water-dropping aircraft and 1 helicopter were able to assist until the last day light on Friday.
State broadcaster ERT reported on Saturday morning citing eyewitnesses that they saw a person on a bicycle and a white t-short short before the fire broke out and that two more fires started a very short time later.
