Greece’s new IDs will be issued from September 25, 2023. the new identity cards will be valid for ten years. Old IDs will be used still for the next two years, that is until 20245.
The new IDs will not contain “any chips or cameras or listening devices,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has told the cabinet.
The announcement that new IDs are on the way has mobilized conspiracy theorists, who see the new cards as a fresh attempt by the authorities to control them through technology.
After Citizen Protection Minister Yiannis Oikonomou briefed the cabinet on the new cards, the ministry published a guide for citizens on the new IDs.
The guide says that under EU Regulation 2019/1157, member states need to issue new identity cards with upgraded security features. ID cards, such as the present Greek one that were first issued in 1961, that do not have a machine-readable zone (which are also contained on passports) will cease to be valid on August 3, 2026.
The new cards will contain the following information on the front: bearer’s photo, ID number, surname, first name, gender, date of birth, nationality, date of issuance, date of expiry, issuing authority and bearer’s signature.
The bearer’s father’s name, mother’s name, place of birth, blood group (optional), height (required for bearer’s over 24 years of age) and space for the personal citizen number (should the government introduce one) will be recorded on the reverse.
The AMKA social security number will not be included on the card.
The security features on the new cards include laser engraving of the bearer’s color photograph and details. They will also contain RFID chip technology, which allows the information stored on it to be read by special chip readers at a close distance.
Citizens will be able to book an appointment to issue a new ID card via the state’s govgr website [ to open at a later point].
It will take up to a week to issue a card, which will cost the applicant 10 euros.
The cards will be valid for 10 years. [via kathimerini]
PS It is not clear whether the new IDs will have the same number as the old IDs otherwise we’ll have to contact all public and private institutions such as public administrations, bank, utility companies etc to renew our ID number every 10 years.
5 million or so English speakers as their first language in the EU (Ireland). Perhaps it is time Greece used German ( I guess this is the most spoken language in the EU) as the second language on this ID for a start, this makes sense. Good for showing unity in the EU etc etc
what?
The second language used on the identity card should be German (main language in the EU i guess) as only 5 million people in the EU use English as their first language.
Therefore from the identity card (google translate)
Identity card = Personalausweis
Nationality = Staatsangehörigkeit
and to;-
Signature of bearer = Unterschrift des Inhabers
etc
Even on our German id cards we have secondary English texts. While your statement about native English speakers in the EU (after Brexit) might be true, there are probably a lot more non native English speaker in the EU than German speakers.
Not even counting that the id card migut be used in non EU countries as well. Not all countries require a passport for entry, many are satisfied with an id card.
😂
Why didn’t you write your comment in German?
The new IDs could use just standardized numbers for each data item like height, weight, date of birth, and national number to minimize the need for any particular language just like the driver’s licenses do. This way the need for any language on the card is minimized. Most people in Europe know English but why would you pick German? The EU is made up of many more countries than Germany and NO country should dominate the EU. If there is a universal language it should be French because that is the diplomatic language.
Worldwide English is the most spoken language with almost 1.5 billion speakers. Germany is eleventh with less than 10 % of that.
Go to any Frontesteria in Greece and ask them what proportion of their students are learning English/French/Spanish/German etc. I bet English is the top by a long way.
Many jobs in Greece, especially in the public sector, require a proficiency certificate in English to qualify for the job. Do any require a proficiency certificate in German?
Listen to a group of people from several different countries talking together. What language are they using? I bet it is virtually always English.
“space for the personal citizen number (should the government introduce one)”
That’s the PLAN – everyone will have a number and the data associated with (your/our)number will include everything we own. Don’t forget, the End-game WEF Mantra is “YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND BE HAPPY”.

Question to Myxomatosis, isn’t RFID CHIP TECHNOLOGY a chip?
Quote from wiki;-
“German is rarely used as a true working language in the Commission, and German media have called the dominance of English and French a discrimination against German (which is the most spoken mother tongue of the EU) and a violation of the regulations pertaining to the EU’s working languages.”
I think having German on the ID papers is a good start to fight against the discrimination. I would prefer that to English at least.
Maybe Germany should pay the war reparations of €289 billion it owes Greece!

?????
A chip like your credit card
PM Says WILL NOT CONTAIN ‘any chips or cameras or listening devices,” …. article goes on to say.. They will also contain RFID chip technology, which allows the information stored on it to be read by special chip readers at a close distance…
so what is it? Just Saying..
much more important than the specific rfid chip on the card or the data stored on it, is the fact that in order to issure the new id, they get everyone to come around for new photos and fingerprints.. which go into databases which pretty much any big organization, government or corporation, in greece and elsewhere, will one way or another get access to. biometric data to match against cameras almost everywhere, for example. With the old physical photo id’s (and no fingerprint collection at all) it remains impractical and unfeasible to use this information in an automated manner. that’s the real boost to tyranny that comes with these kind of digitization programmes. The fact that people like kouli go deliberately exaggerating and mocking people talking about ‘cameras and listening devices’ is mere distraction, meant to with a wave of the hand dismiss any real and serious concerns as tinfoil fantasies. the real public danger with all of these things is the fact that everything in those databases is now always available to be used against everyone, everywhere. Even if you think you’re a good obedient servant of the system and will always be comfortable… mm, think again. the moment you might even wrinkle your nose at something , down the line, some china-style social credit camera will be ready to capture the gesture , identify you, and dock you a few points for being unenthusiastic about the new Five Year Plan or whatever. you think that’s not practical? thats off the shelf available from vendors _today_.
The chip will also read our sinister thoughts. On the positive side, the system may send us only food we like. – you didn’t hear it from me.
This is a good start however the ID card which is a useful measure can easily be lost or damaged, or some citizens will have trouble using the cards because of physical ailments. I hope for our safety the government has set up working groups to look at the permanent technology used in protecting cats/dogs and cattle. Are dogs and cats more important? I hope the Ministry for the Protection of the Citizen are on this and not derelict in their duties.
