PM says he can understand “anger and rage,” describes floods as “big hitch”

“I can understand people’s anger and rage,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during a visit to flood-stricken areas in central Greece on Friday.

“I understand both anger and rage. I never hid, I’m always here in difficult times. We will back up, we will support the local governments,” he said adding “I want you to know that we will do everything humanly possible.”

In statements he described the disaster with over half a million hectares covered with water and mud, destroyed agriculture, livestock and homes, an unknown number of dead and missing and still hundreds of people waiting for rescue without food, water and medicines for at least 48 hours as a “big hitch.”

Flown there with a Chinook helicopter and an entourage of several some 30 people, the prime minister talked with flood-stricken locals and rescuers at a  community hall of the city of Karditsa, where rescued citizens arrive.

He reassured citizens and local mayors that he will do everything possible to provide assistance to the flood-stricken residents, adding that he will mobilize any European resources available to support those affected by the severe weather conditions.

He announced that damage records would begin immediately for households structures and compensation for destroyed houses as well as priority for the restoration of infrastructure and networks.

“We will do whatever it takes. I will also mobilize whatever European resources are available so that we can have additional support, to cover first of all the compensation needs of households,” he added.

The mayors of the region spoke of an unprecedented phenomenon and set the priorities of each municipality, with an emphasis on the rescue of citizens, especially the most vulnerable, on providing food to the citizens, on accommodating those who have been left without homes, on restoring electricity and water supply followed by the recording of the damages and the need to provide compensations quickly, as well as restoring the infrastructures.

  1. Nice photo opportunity…
What did his government do the previous years to avoid or mitigate disasters? To improve preparedness and response? To implement the UN Sendai framework for disaster risk reduction?

And now other Europeans need to pay up for this cluster fvck, knowing all too well that a lot of that money willend up in the pockets of corrupt people?

  2. Shame on him.Such a huge natural disaster and they couldn’t manage to send out help earlier.I even sent a message to Skai news, saying it was disgusting that it took them so long to send out the army.
    They haven’t got a clue!!!
