Twenty-four municipalities in the Region of Attica have been ordered to proceed immediately with the cleaning of the waterways of Kifissos river and two of its tributaries, Podoniftis and Eschatia, in view of the risk of flooding.
For Kifissos: the Municipalities of Acharnai, Dionysos, Kifissia, Metamorfosi, Agioi Anargyroi, Aigaleo, Peristeri, Athinaia, Nea Philadelphia, Moschato, Nikaia, Agios Ioannis Rentis, and Piraeus.
For Podoniftis water stream: the Municipalities of Marousi, Vrilissia, Chalandri, Nea Ionia, Penteli, Filothei-Psychiko, Philadelphia-Chalkidona and Athens.
For Echatia water stream: The municipalities of Phyli, Ilio, Acharnai and Agioi Anargyroi.
The decision aims for the Region of Attica and the relevant Municipalities to proceed immediately and without any delay in carrying out works to clean and restore the watercourses in view of the threatened risk of flood phenomena, a Civil Protection statement underlined.
Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, said on Tuesday that the decision to instruct the municipalities to take action was based on “the results of the on-site inspections done on the Kifissos river regarding the flood risk.”
“The Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has no responsibility for planning and implementing anti-flood projects but it has a sacred obligation to protect citizens,” he made clear.
Kifissos is the largest river of Attica with a length of 27 kilometers and its largest part flows under the Athens-Lamia highway.
It originates from the natural hub of Penteli Mt, west of Ekali and east of Thracomakedes and Parnitha Mt, and bisects the capital until its estuary at the Faliriko bay, in the Saronic Gulf.
Before its estuary in the Falirikos bay, it meets the Ilisos river, the second largest river in Attica that flows under Kalirrois Avenue and other main streets of Athens.
