Norwegian national stabs to death police officer in Thessaloniki

A Norwegian national stabbed to death a police officer in a bar in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, early Thursday morning. The victim died on the spot.

According to state broadcaster ERT, the 32-year-old officer was stabbed to death with a knife after he reprimanded the Norwegian man over his rowdy behavior.

The 44-year-old Norwegian national has been arrested.

According to media reports, the perpetrator had been arguing with a friend of the police officer when the latter stepped in to stop the fight from escalating, after  the Norwegian national stabbed the officer’s friend in the leg. The suspect allegedly responded by pulling out a knife and stabbing him at least twice, injuring him fatally.

One of the stabs injured the victim in his ear, a second one in the neck. The victim, who was off-duty, died within a few minutes. An autopsy is to be conducted.

The incident happened between 4 and 5 a.m. at a bar located right beside the police station in Thessaloniki downtown.

ERT reported that the perpetrator has been living in Thessaloniki for the last seven years and spoke passable Greek.

Eyewitnesses told media that the Norwegian man was heavily drinking and he  was known in the area for causing troubles also in the past.

According to police sources, the perpetrator was so drunk that he was unable to testify after he was arrested and taken to police station.
