Mandatory POS in farmers’ markets may lead to price increases

The implementation of Point of Sale (POS) machines for credit and debit card transactions in farmer’s markets will begin on Tuesday,  January 2, 2024, the Panhellenic Federation of Professional Sellers of Farmer’s Markets announced Saturday.

This marks a new era for farmer’s markets, obligating the universal use of POS machines to optimize service for both consumers and vendors.

Effective from Tuesday, sellers in farmer’s markets, fairs, and Sunday markets must accept card payments and instant payment services.

Regarding penalties for non-compliance, a ministerial decision specifies that, exceptionally, no fines will be imposed on new obligees from February 1 to March 1, 2024, provided they have procured card acceptance terminals by January 31, 2024, and are awaiting installation.

The penalty is 1,500 euros for those who have not installed the POS within the specified time limit or refuse to accept payments via cards.

Speaking to media, farmers’ market sellers said the price increase of the items they sell may be inevitable as they will be burdened with extra costs for the use of POS. They implied to implement a different pricing if payments in cash or with card in order to come up with the commission banks cash for the use of POS.
They argued that often the volume of transactions is very low.
The mandatory use of POS is reportedly implemented also to kiosks, taxis, theaters and cinemas and some other sectors, totaling 35.

  1. My wife purchased an item for me for Christmas from our Monday market on Thassos .
She noted to her suprise that the market trader put a receipt in the bag along with the item .
It was not until she returned home and took the item out of the bag and looked at the receipt only to find it was 25% of what she had paid .
