The president of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels, Alexandros Vassilikos conveyed to Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni the concerns and worries of the chamber’s members and representatives of tourist businesses regarding the draft law imposing a specific quota of Greek language songs in common areas of hotels.
Beginning of the month, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni decided out of the blue to force hotels, airport lounges and other facilities such as shopping malls, casinos etc to have a 45%-quota of the music transmission with Greek-language songs or their orchestral version.
The decision triggered an outrage among business owners and the society, hoteliers were the first to react with anger.
In his meeting with the Tourism Ministry, president Vassilikos also requested the intervention of Kefalogianni to withdraw the relevant provisions.
Kefalogianni emphasized that the government has demonstrated the significant importance it places on the development of Greek tourism and recognizes its contribution to the economy and society.
She highlighted that any legislative interventions must result from dialogue and be governed by a modern and pioneering European governance that respects the liberal functioning of the market, daily kathimerini reported.
