The bodies of a 63-year-old mother and her 36-year-old son were found in their home in Ilioupoli suburb of eastern Athens on Thursday. The bodies were discovered following a complaint that “a strong, unpleasant odor” was coming from the apartment.
Most possible scenario considered by the police is that the son killed his mother with a rifle and then committed suicide.
Police officers broke the front door to the apartment to find the mother on a chair with a gunshot wound on her face and the son on her bed also with a wound caused by a gun.
The shot gun was also found in the house, however, there was no evidence that somebody had broke in with the purpose of a robbery.
It was the grandmother who lives in a different apartment but in the same building who called the police, daily ethnos.gr reported. She complained about the odor and said she had not seen the two since last week.
The bodies have been transferred to the morgue for forensic examination and whether the son had gunpowder traces on his hands.
According to news website in.gr, the husband and father of the family died in 2019, however, he owned a shotgun.
According to neighbors, mother and son had frequent arguments, however, the young man had no history of using substances or of mental issues.
Mother and son were working from home.
